This book is enjoyable on many levels. On the face of it, you have a romantic element developing, as the two main characters, Dan and Crystal, get to know each other. But that is only one element of the story. There is a complex plot involving an assassin and characters that appear to be stalking our heroes. You find yourself making assumptions as to their intentions and reasons, but there are surprises in store - a part that I thought played out very well.
I enjoyed the character of Dan, who I thought was especially well-drawn, a fully rounded person; very likeable, realistic. Crystal seemed less complete as a person by comparison, and I felt that this was one area which had room for development. However, this in no way detracted from my enjoyment of the story, and the impression was that Crystal was a credible character, but we just needed time to get to know her better.
The element involving the Nazis and the history from the Second World War was sensitively handled. Personally I found the detail about Amsterdam very interesting both from a historical point of vew and as a prospective tourist.
The story is intriguing, flows well and keeps you reading to the end, and the language is easy to follow. This is not a challenging book; rather it is a good piece of entertainment.

Amsterdam Calling edition by Tom Benson Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews
Interesting view of Amsterdam. Not what I expected.
I really liked this book because I am planning a trip to Amsterdam so I appreciated the way the author described the city. There was a little of everything in this book including murder, mystery, romance , history and geography. It was an enjoyable read.
Sometimes a book surprises me and that is nearly always a good thing. Having read Tom Benson’s page turning ‘Beyond The Law’, I made assumptions about Amsterdam Calling before I read the first page and one should never make assumptions. This was a very different book but nonetheless equally enjoyable. Tom showed he has more than one trick up his sleeve here.
Amsterdam calling has a more delicate side if you will, with romance and intrigue cleverly intertwining to tell an intricate tale or should I say tales as this is a multi-stranded plot. Once again as with ‘Beyond The Law’, Tom has a desire to bring the reader into the location where his books are set. Quite often this can put me to sleep in a book, but Tom Benson is never boring and he details Amsterdam perfectly.
As with any review I am loathe to give away any spoilers but this is essentially a thriller with just the right dose of romance, that revolves around the two central characters Dan and Crystal and stories from their past. With both in danger from very different directions, Tom builds this one at a wonderfully steady pace with just the right injection of action when needed. I suggest you pick this one up; it is my second Tom Benson book and it has sent me looking for number three.
I really enjoyed this book – a gripping story that definitely holds its own with any blockbuster thriller / suspense novel.
The story revolves around a trip to Amsterdam, and the author takes a fascinating approach in that he manages to effectively combine a travelogue and a suspense story. It was uniquely satisfying to flick to the next page, eager to see what unfolds for our two heroes, and at the same time gain fascinating insights into the culture of Amsterdam. I have never been, but now I definitely want to go!
It is essential for me that I care what happens to the good guys, and the central couple in this novel subtly grew on me – to the point where I genuinely worried for them. This is something many authors fail to achieve, and it is a credit to the skill of this writer that he so subtly achieves this. Conversely, the main bad guy is indeed a chilling character, but the author manages to give him enough back story to make him human, so rather than a cardboard cut-out of a bad guy, he is a complex and interesting character.
Even though the story is a bit of a juggling act – two strands of conflict / danger and a developing love affair - it is expertly paced, and the writer deftly weaves the various strands to make for a highly satisfying story, one that builds to an imaginative and breath-taking show down. Highly recommend this book and am definitely going to pick up more work by the author.
I look for free books and selected quite a few to try, including this one. After getting through two, and not even able to finish the third, I tried to approach this one next with an open mind. Those first three were really bad. This one was really, really good! Entwining two mysteries with the two leading characters, AND throwing in some romance made this a very exciting and fun read. The only problem I had was how every bike pedaling trip listed the Dutch street names. In addition to being very hard to pronounce (I gave up), using mostly left turn, right turn descriptions, I just couldn't figure out which direction they were traveling. If a map had been provided with more information, I think I would have felt more like I knew Amsterdam better. But this problem is mine, and it didn't spoil the book at all. I loved "seeing" Amsterdam's museums and attractions through the eyes of Dan and Crystal. The ending was great, but I wish there could be a sequel that told how the romance (hopefully) continued. Nice length, nice editing, I definitely recommend this book.
